MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr LI. Y. Widdowson, S.M.) DR U NX EN N ESS. A statutory lirst offender for drunkenness was fined 20s, in default three days’ imprisonment. Two statutory first offenders for drunkenness were lined 10s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. REMANDED. Charles Henry Aitkens, aged fiftytwo, accountant (Mr Cuthbert) was charged with having embezzled £37, received on account of the Stony Creek Sawmilling Proprietary Company, on December IS, 1922, at Stawcll, Victoria. Mr Cuthbert said that his client had been manager of a sawrnilling business in Melbourne. The company with which he was associated went into voluntary liquidation, and Aitkens came across to New Zealand. He started work on his own account in Invercargill, and when lie heard from his wife in Australia.that the present charge had been instituted against him. lie immediately took steps to return to the Commonwealth. He was on his way back when he was arrested. Counsel had been instructed to ask the Magistrate for a remand, accused to appear later At Victoria. Failing that being grunted, he would ask for a remand only. Aitkens was a man of means, and he had a substantial credit at his ban*-; at Invercargill. He had also put a considerable amount of money into his business. Chief Detective Gibson asked thatbail be substantial, and accused was remanded until May 9. hail being allowed in the surety of £3OO and two sureties of £l5O. JUVENILE COURT. (Before Mr H. .Y Widdowson, S.M.) MISCHIEVOUS BOYS. Three boy 6, who were chargjed a fortnight ago with having broken int> a vacant house and committed mischief; were each remanded for twelve months, during which time they will be under the discretionary control of the Juvenile Probation Officer, with the additional provision that each lad will receive a .sound thrashing. The parents were ordered to make restitution for the damage done. UNDER AGE. Two lads, both fifteen years of age. admitted having been in .possession of pea-rifles while under age. Senior Sergeant Lewin said that the boys had been shooting rabbits near the Shirley golf links when a third boy was accidentally shot in the shoulder enham, the property of the Christ--church Hospital. Each boy was ordered to pay costs 7s, and the rifle which they had used between them was forfeited. BROKE LAMPS. A fifteen-year-old boy was charged with breaking two street lamps at Sydenham, the proprety of the Christchurch City Council. He was ordered to pay 5s 6d, the cost of the damage, and was admonished and discharged.
