KAIKOURA DISTURBED. CHIMNEYS DOWN NEAR CLARENCE RIVER. COAST LINE SUBSIDES. Pea I**ESS Association. BLENHEIM, May 2. Round about Kaikoura and in tlic vicinity of tli-e Clarence River bridge residents had an uneasy night on Thursday during a series of earthquake shocks which were more severe there than in the Blenheim district. It is said that forty-three* shocks were counted on Thursdav night, the worst at 11.30. Shakes were again felt at intervals throughout yesterday and two shocks last night. Reports from the Clarence stale that chimneys are down in all diActions. It is the opinion of residents tjiat the disturbance centred in the ocean off the coast, a mile south of the Clarence. A crack opened along the coast road and the land on the seaward side of the creek appears to have subsided. Telephones around about the Clarence bridge have been thrown out of order.
