A sensational incident occurred on the showground in connection with the polic© carnival. One oi : the acts in a play of wild life in Australia depicted the descent ol' the Nod Kelly {rang, resplendent as bushrangers, upon the Glenrowan Inn, which was represented by a small Hessian hut. Five couples were dancing inside, and should have rushed out when the bushrangers arrived, and the hut was to have burst into flames. The canvas along the bottom had been saturated with petrol and a four gallon tin was standing in the doorway. As the | bushrangers galloped up, firing a lusilade of blank cartridges, a horse upset the petrol tin which caught alight instantly. The hut became a mass of flames, and enveloped the dancers, who stinggled through the narrow doorway with their hair and clothes afire. Some collapsed outside. Six were severely burned and were removed to hospital. It was a scene of great excitement. There were 30.(XX) spectators present when the accident occurred.
