Sir Auckland Geddes. opening the first pub'ic sitting of the Food Prices Inquiry < ommission. said that, their task was to d.scorer why food now cost 79 per cent above, the level of prices in July. 1914. "We are here to find out the truth, not to whitewash either side - ’ the. chairman added. The bulk of the evidence would be taken in public, but there were some witnesses who must be heard privately. Mf A. W. Flux, statistical officer of the Board of Trade, gave evidence that Britain's expenditure on all kinds of food, at retail prices, total'ed between £1.230,000,000 and £1.400.000,000 annuallv.
