TRAMWAY FARES.
The new award governing the wages and conditions of the Christchurch tramway and power-house employees provides for an increase in wages generally of fd an hour. This is the on v important change that the Arbitration Court, has made, but it is estimated that it will increase the wages bill of the Tramway Board by close on £3OOO per annum. The board is also faced with a possible big increase in the charges for Lake Coleridge power. This increase may mean an additional expenditure of £7OOO or £BOOO a year. When asked yesterday if this increased expenditure would result in anv alteration in fares. Mr F. Thompson, general manager of the tramways, implied : ‘ AVe.ll, you can’t make bricks without straw. Perhaps the newspaper critics will be able to tell us what to do. They told us that, in order to get more revenue we should reduce fares and popularise the service. We reduced lares and carried more people, but we did not get more revenue."
