DERRY’S MILITARY BAND.
TO-MORROW’S CONCERT.
Derry’s military band, the only military band in New Zealand, will give a concert on the Victoria Square rotunda to-morrow afternoon at 3 p.m. This barid recently visited Wellington and gave a series of concerts there. The large town hall proved all too small to hold the crowd wishing to hear the hand. Concerts were also given at His .Majesty’s Theatre and at Oriental Bay. and on each occasion the band were accorded a very fine reception and earned very high praise from the newspaper critics of Wellington. Derry’s Band was formed ir« 1901 with twelve performers, while to-day it claims sixtysix instrumentalists and the conductor. The composition of the band is as follows : Twenty clarinets, twelve saxaphonee, nine cornets, six basses, four tenor horns, four trombones, three euphoniums, three drums, two flutes, two baritone*, one obeo, tiropany, etc. Mr P. Wiliamson, a very fine cornet player, is bandmaster, Mr Fred Woledge, one of the best clarinet players in the Dominion, is chief performer in that section, and Mr Albert Hutton, one of the highest, grade players, is leading flautist. It may not be generally known that the famous Grenadier Guards’ band in England is not quite as strong numerically as Derry’s Band. For to-morrow afternoon’s concert a very fine programme has been arranged, and music lovers have a treat in store for them at Victoria Square.
