At the Magistrate's Court, Anad--tasios Makres Berdebes. a Greek, pleaded guilty to being in possession of opium suitable for smokimr. Counsel explained that a Chinaman gave accused the opium to sell. AccuM*d was an ignorant man. knowing jittlo English. |f© became frightened and did nothing. He had the opium in his possession when arrested. The police stated that accuser! was ■not so simple ns he made out-, and was trying to sell the opium, whose value he knew. Accused was fined £6O. the opium to be handed to the Customs authorities.
