SOUTHLAND NOTES.

(Special to “ Star.”) INVERCARGILL, December 8. Very satisfactory entries have been received for the Gore Trotting Club’s meeting on Boxing Day, including a large contingent from Dunedin and further north. At the Gore A. and P. Show Mohawk apd Sunlit were awarded championship tickets in their respective classes, the former being mated with a good class of mares/ in tho Eastern District this season. W. Stone’s recent purchase, Master Sandstone, is ou the easy list at present, having been kicked on the knee by a stable companion. The square trotter Clonmel, who lightened up during the Forbury Park meeting, is being Kept up to the collar on the Southland Racing Club’s tracks in view’ of a trip to Auckland at tho end of tho month. The imported mare Sabor, who has been returned to her owner, A. Chisholm of Otautau, tc be mated with Some Boy 11., the Aust-raliain bred sire being held in the same ownership. The daughter of Fowling Piece is to continue in training with a view to racing at minor southern fixtures, prior to her retirement from the turf. The brood mare Eager Eyes, dam Listening Post—Laughing Eyes, returned here during the week after a visit to North Otago. During - her absenco-'the American bred mare produced a nice filly foal to Solferino. She w*as then mated with Kilbroney.

An addition has been made to F. Ellis’s string, in the shape of a five-year-old mare called Wild Berry by Balboa—YVild Oats (imp.). Wild Berry, w'ho is the property of J. Graham, tho successful owner of Golden King-and Wild Pilgrim of a few years ago, is the first progeny of Balboa, being sired while the New Zealand Derby and Auckland Cup winner was «till in training under P. Hogan. Listening Post, Laughing Eyes, Londonderry and Andante aro all doing good work on local Hacks and are members of F. Ellis’s team. The local mentor also has a couple of two-year-olds in commission in the shape of a gelding by Solferino —Kilberry and a filly by Buckwheat —Eager Eyes. The former may make his debut at the D.J.C. summer fixture.

Counterstroke got through his Winton engagements soundly, and continues to work satisfactorily as ono of the pupils of the local trainer, J. Parkhurst.

Maytime and Obligio have been on the easy list during the current week, J. A. Rowland’s promising charges having both been victims of slight accidents.

Rose Lady, in the same stable, is looking well and is galloping very freely on the S.R.C. training ground. War haven is putting on condition under tho care of the veteran horseman G. Hope, but so far he has been restricted to work on the lead and road exercise. Ho is sound enough, but requires some building up.
