NORTHERN DISTRICT.
KAIAPOI. The flood water has now receded from the majority of the houses, and a general cleaning up is in progress. The effects of the inundation on house rur nifhinga is beginning to be fully real ised. In some vicinities a deplorable state of affairs exists. Valuable pianos, furniture and bedding, which liad to be loft in the houses, are in a good many cases found to be practically ruined Thick deposits of silt have been left on walls and floors, and some houses will have to be completely renovated. The Kaiapoi Fire Brigade was busily engaged yesterday pumping out cellars. At. the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills, work is going on as usual in the carding, spinning and milling departments. One serious effect of the flood is the shortage of feed for »took. With winter coming on and several inches of silt covering thousands of aores. it will probably be found necessary to move cattle t * other districts.
