THE ASHLEY RIVER. UTbe reiterated statement in the Kaiapoi flood news (writes the Rangaera correspondent of the “ Star ”) that the damage wae.pprtly attributable to an overflow from the river Ashley .'s quite erroneous. There was no overflow of the river above the railwav bridge, consequently no water from t-he river oould have reached Kaiapoi. The Ashlsy is responsible for a large amount damage, but it was all caused by overflows between, the railway bridge and the sea. LETTHFIEED LIBRARY. The Kowai River, in overflowing down the main road at Leithfield, scoured out the earth under the foundation of the public library hall, causing the building to sag down at one earner. The residents, by shoring up the toun dations and walls, saved the building from serious collapse. The river too* y new coume to the s*ea distant about half a mile, through the. farms borderihg on its south bank, and the flow of flood water on to the back washed aw ay to sea the bathers’ dressing sheds, one of which contained the recently formed .Surf Club’s- life-saTing reel.
