OPIUM CONFERENCE.
CONTROL OF NARCOTICS. By Telegraph—Pre.ts Association—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. NEW YORK. May 2. The “New York Times” Washing ton correspondent says Mr C. E. Hughes, Secretary ot' State, has designated a committee, headed by Representative Porter, to attend the Opium Conference at Geneva on May 26. The committee will follow closely the policy contained in the Porter resolution, ‘and will suggest an international convention governing the production and distribution of narcotics. They will also be prepared to co-oper-ate with the conference in every way possible, though the meeting is essentially a body operating under Hie auspices of the League of Nations. A Washington message, published on March 2. stated: —The Senate passed Senator Porter's resolution instructing the President to communicate with Governments of countries where drug elements were produced, to ascertain whether production could be reduced to bare medical needs in an effort to stifle the traffic of narcotics.
