DATE OF ELECTIONS.

SHOULD NOT INTERFERE WITH CHRISTMAS TRADE. ]\! r R. C. Bishop moved the following motion at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Employers’ Association last night: “That this meeting respectfully requests the Prime Minister t(, arrange that, in the interests of ! traders throughout the Dominion, and ; j,, order not to interfere with the early i Christmas shopping on the part of the public*, the general elections should be j held not later than the end of Novem- j “ It doesn’t affect me or ray com- \ panv personally.” Mr Bishop san., < * but it will be recognised that Chris*- j mas time is one of the best time* in 5 the year for trade generally. We have . gone through some very strenuous j times in the past year or two. At i Christmas, in accordance with a very j ancient custom, we loose our purse- i strings, and tradespeople have come to . look *tc it a* a time in which they can ! recoup themselves for hard times. Why > the general elections should he held i practically in the middle of Christmas j M ock, I don’t know. The Govern- I merit, no doubt, has good reasons for 1 selecting that time, but T can’t help i

thinking that it could expedite the ! elections by a week or two. Recent j experiences call for greater consider- j ation on our part, and on the part or j the Government, than fixing the tur- j moil of the elections for a time when we wish to devote our money to pur- j chases amongst tradespeople.” The motion was seconded by Mr K. H. AY vies (president of the association) and was carried unanimously.
