CHAMBER CONCERT.
Tho first ol a series of four concerts. promoted by a small band of musical enthusiasts, the leading spirit among whom seems to be Aliss AI. H. Coombs, assisted by Airs J. E. Russell, took place in tho Je-Uicoe Hall yesterday afternoon in. tho presence of :i large and appreciative audience. The arrangement of the stage, designed by Aliss Coombs, had been carried out oil lines of severe and artistic simplicity draped black curtains providing an effective toil to tho dresses of tho two porformcra and showing up the. pots of tall feathery palms and the big bowl of yellow and henna chrysanthemums. Ihe finishing touch was given by a piece of gold brocade thrown across tho back of the piano. Over all shone the softly shaded pink lights. Aliss Sclierek wore a wonderful frock of dull Oriental satin, draped in graceful folds from the shoulders, leaving the arms bare, tho underdress being of bronze-gold satin. A long necklace of yellow to7iaz completed the colour note. Her playing of her numbers was received witli enthusiastic applause, and. fdie was the recipient during the afternoon ol a costly Ixix of chocolates. Miss Alillieent Jennings, who was in excellent voice, was robed in black gporgettc, opening over white, the skirt part being heavily embroidered in gold motifs. Her contribution to the programme ferund much favour with th©“audience. Among the many musiclovers present were Alr and Airs Loughnnn. accompanied by Air and Mrs L. R. Jennings (Hong Kong).
