RATES ON SPORTS GROUNDS.

REDUCTION SOUCHT. The By-laws and Finance Committee reported to the City Council last night that it had given the question of the remission of rates on bowling greens, croquet greens and tennis courts, privately owned, careful consideration, and, in view of tho heavy burden placed upon latepayers, could not recommend that these grounds should be exempted from the payment of rates. Councillor I>. G. Sullivan, M.P., said that he would like to see some relief granted, if the amount involved was not too great. Councillor -1. R. Brunt, in disagreeing with the cbmmittee’s recommendation. said that for the past six years the Wellington City Council had remitted a third of the total rates on such sports grounds. The council should make a distinction between bowling clubs, which made no profits, and bodies liko the Lancaster Park Board of Control. If the rates were not remitted, higher subscriptions would be necessary. Councillor J. A. Flesher said that the clubs, which were proprietary, were entitled to get a revision of their valuation, which would he greater or lesser according to the financial position of the clubs. The clause was held over until the next meeting.
