SOUTHERN MAORI SEAT.

MR H. W. URU ELECTED. The by-election for the Southern Maori seat, which ivas rendered vacant by the death of Mr J. H. W. Urn, was held yesterday and resulted in the election of Mr H. W. Uru, a brother oi the deceased member. The polling hours were between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and the election was conducted by Mr S. E. M’Carthy, S.M., the returning officer, assisted in Christchurch bv Mr J. R. Sansom. Polling \yaa much heavier than at the general election in 1919, 814 votes being case yesterdav compared with 688 in 1919. Mr M’Oarthy expressed his appreciation of the excellent assistance given by the officers of the Telegraph Department and also his own deputy returning officer. There were forty polling places scattered throughout the South Island and the adjacent islands and the last return was received by Mr M’Carthy at 7.20 p.m. The following was the result of the poll: H. W. Uru T. M. Erihana (Ellison) (Government) .... 250 W. T. Pitama. (Independent) - 199 W. D. Barrett (Independent) - 90 On the first count Mr Barrett will lose his deposit. Details of the polling at each booth are as follows:
