UNIVERSITY DEGREES.
SENATE’S DECISION. ( Per Prj-sb Association.) AUCKLAND, January 18. At the meeting of the University Senate, Professor Benharn moved that no degree be conferred upon a. graduate unless ho himself to the Chancellor or his delegate, provided that, by permission} of the Chancellor, a degree may be conferred in absentia. The mover expressed the opinion that no student should be allowed to use a degree until it had been conferred in formal fashion. The Chancellor strongly opposed, stating that it was of no advantage to education) that a degree l>e conferred in public. The motion was really the result of past misbehaviour on the part of some students on graduation day. The chickens had come home to roost. The motion Was, carried by 18 votes to 16.
