LOWEST BAROMETER ON RECORD.

READING LAST NIGHT 25.576 HEAVY WIND PROBABLE.. The lowest barometer reading ever registered at the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory, was recorded at 5.40 p.m. yesterday, when the glass fell to 28.576. It rose slowly for twenty-four hours, and then rose more rapidly. The indications are for high winds, if nothing worse. Previous low barometer readings were supplied tc-day by Air H. F. Ske.y, director of the observatory, as follows : May 2k, 1907—28.830. Oct. 11. 1907—28.862. April 15, 1910—28,976. Dec. 6, 1911—28 650. Sept>2l 1912—28 887. Alay 19, 1913—28.751. Nov. 27, 1914—28.936. June 13, 1915—28.931. August 21, 1916—28.901. March 19. 1918—28.616. Oct. 15 98—28.897. April 9, 921—28.892. August 4, 1921—28.576. Air Skey stated to a <c Star reporter that the low barometer was due probably to a cyclonic disturbance which had its centre somewhere near Christchurch. Although Christchurch has escaped rough weather, there had been severe storms in the North Island and the Tasman Sea, and Canterbury might not escape. There might be a spell of bad weather, but the greater probability was very high winds However, it was not easy to make a forecast on an isolated reading, and a better prediction could bo made by Mr D. C. Bates, who had the advantage of studying the reports from all centres. “ I hope it will be fine for Tuesday,” Mr Skey added.
