HIGH TIDES.

SEA CALM AGAIN. The abnormally high tides that were experienced at Redcliffs last evening did not rise above the normal level this morning. No news has been received of anv extraordinary conditions prevailing along the coast. AT NEW BRIGHTON. Late yesterday afternoon the Avon River at New Brighton was but a few inches from the top of the stone wall at the Tram Bridge, and the tide then' was was still coining in fast. By five o’clock the water was over the top m places, and was sweeping across River Road and along the side channels. Many of the paddocks lying alongside the river were inundated. Around .Herring Bay and Pleasant Point was further evidence of tlie exceptionally high tide. Estuary Road for some distance was one sheet of water, and the river banks were well covered. One resident was forced to use a horse and trap to bring his family home. On the beach the tide was exceptionally high and but for the fact that the sea was not exceptionally rough, there would undoubtedly have been considerable damage. However, except for the washing away of the fringes of the foremost sandhills, little damage lias resulted. This morning, at high tide, although the river and sea were again well up. there was no sign of any further damA great factor in subduing the heavy sea last nmht was the fact that there was no easterly wind. With the assistance of an easterly wind an ordinary sea comes well up the beach.
