WORKERS’ HOMES.

ALLOCATION SOON. HUXLEY STREET HOUSES. The eight City Council houses in Huxley Street are practically finished, and five of the Government’s seventy houses at Papanui are finished and waiting connection with the water supply. Tiie remaining houses are being completed slowly, but the contractor is installing a wood-working plant, which will expedite the work. Tho allocation of houses in both settlements will be undertaken soon. The eight city houses will be disposed of at roughly £l2O each, under a sale and purchase agreement, with a £SO deposit and at a low rate of interest. These details will be decided at Monday's meeting of the City Council. Applications will lie invited and preference will be given to applicants with large families. There are three types of houses, and where there are more applicants than houses a ballot will be resoited to. It is understood that the Government houses Mill be disposed of by ballot, but preference will be given to men with the largest families. The houses are said to ’ very attractive, but lack of foresight appears to be shown in connection with the laying out of roads. The settlement yesterday was under water, and waggons were almost bogged getting in and out.
