MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
CHRISTCHURCH. TO-DAY'S CASES. (Before Air S. E. M’Carthv, 6.AT.) A COSTLY PLEA. “Ten shillings or forty-eight hours,” • safd the Ala gist rate, when a statutory i first offender appeared before him. ; Inspector Hendry had explained that lie had mistakenly assumed that plaintiff had pleaded guilty. The plea was one of not guilty. “Judging by outward appearances,' each of the constables was satisfied ; that 1 was not drunk,” said the de- : fend ant. Evidence was given that defendant J had been found drunk on the railway ! platform. “ Now it is a much more serious case : than I thought.” said the Magistrate, giving liis judgment. “You are liable j to a £lO fine or imprisonment. You j are fined £2. with costs, in default seven days’ imprisonment.” BREACH OF ORDER. Peter Bryson, junior,was fined £5, | in default a month’s imprisonment, for i procuring liquor while he was prohibited from doing so. MAINTENANCE. David Taylor (Air J. K. Cunningham) j was provisionally sentenced to two | months’ imprisonment for disobedience j of a maintenance order in respect of Lucy Taylor (Mr C. S. Thomas). Henry Joseph Gardiner was ordered to pay maintenance at the rate of £1 a week to Clara Gardiner (Mr H. JD. Acland). WARNED. John Joseph Adams pleaded guilty to having committed two breaches of a prohibition order issued against him. Inspector Hendry stated that the man seemed to take no notice of his order. He had got drunk, and terrified j his family. Defendant was fined £3 on one of the charges, and convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon on tho other, the Magistrate warning him that if he repeated his offences he would be sent to Roto Roa. REMANDED. Lawrence Breach (Air R-. A. Cuthbert, instructed by Air W. F. Tracey) was charged with having had carnal knowledge of a girl under sixteen years of age. Accused was remanded until June 22.
