MAN BURNED TO DEATH.
BODY FOUND IN DEBRIS. HOUSE ABLAZE AT HORNBY A fatal fire occurred at Hornby ; about three o’clock yesterday after- j noon, when an eight-roomed house, j owned by Air F. H. -Steel, butcher, of Christchurch, was completely destroy- ! ed. The occupant, John Hampton. j fifty-five years of age, employed as a i meat-cart driver, is believed to have j perished in the flames. Hampton was last seen alive at j about 2 p.m. He was then about to put on a fire in the kitchen range. This morning, after searching the debris, the police found a body, charred and unrecognisable, which is assumed to be that of Hampton, who had Jived in the hoMse alone. Hampton was a single man with sisters residing in Cashel Street. Christchurch. The house was an old one and the flames spread through it very rapidlyFurther, there was no water or appliances available with which to fight the outbreak. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The house was insured for £3OO n
