CRICKET.

cm mo suimiii. NOTES ON THE PLAY. (By ” MID-OFF.") The third round of matches in tint City and Suburban Association’s competitions were tiuislu'd on Saturday in weather that could hardly ho called cricket weather, as a strong sou’-west : wind was blowing, making it, very unpleasant for the fielders. The wickets at Sydenham I’ark arc not up to the standard of last season, and it is now time they were showing ini prove mem. A little more water and rolling would make a big difference. In the match Greens against, Railway Greens on the first day made 2SS. Railway started hatting, but wickets, fell fairly quickly, and the side were out lor 80, Taylor 27 and Allan Brown 2d not out, alone making any showing with the bat. In the follow-on the side did much better, putting up Bid, Clements 71, Andy Brown 37 and Levi 42 not out, showing improved form with tho hat. Railway have several good batsmen, lint they seem to lose heart when a wicket or two falls cheap. Batstouc, Jones and Duggan accounted for most of the Railway wickets. The Crowna 11-St Albans match at tho end of the first day s play left things in a very interesting state, Crowuall in the first innings leading by 17 nm», ami losing three wickets for 32 runs in tiny second innings. Continuing on Saturday in their second innings they realised 100, Hobbs 31 not out and Rix 28 halting best. Hobbs deserves all llie success he gets, as ho is very keen on practice. St Albans, requiring lIS to win. were, all out for 05, A. Pitt 22, Evans 21 and Soper 19 being the most successful batsmen. Bates, for Growna.il, bowled well, sending down twelve overs for 35 runs and taking seven wickets against the strong wind. R. Winter and A. Pitt bowled well for St Albans. Crownall are very • unlucky in losing A. Peters.' who has mot with an injury to one of liis legs, receiving a nasty knock from a ball while tit practice. Peters is a very useful man. both with the bat and as a,wicket-keeper, and all wish him a quick recovery. This is the, second time lie has met with an accident at cricket. A few seasons ago, before going to the waj, while playing tor Limvood Wanderers he had his nose broken by a ball sent down by Crosson. The first round in tho competition is now finished, Crowna 11 leading with 8 points, Greens being second with 6, St Albans 3, Railway 0. The second round will commence on Saturday, Greens meeting St Albans at St Albans Park and Crownall meeting Railway at Sydenham Park. There is every possibility of a first grade team visiting Wellington either at Christmas or New Year’s time. In the second grade competition Roys’ Gordon Hall accounted for Woolston by 124 on the first innings, Woolston making 207 while Boys’ Gordon Hall replied with 311 (Grose 109, Kellv 54, Burley 44). ■Belfast defeated Now Brighton rather easily by an innings and 83 runs. Templeton defeated Greens by an innings and 21 runs, Lagan 36 and Palloon (16 and 22 showing the best form tor Greens. • The second grade competition will probably be fought out between Boys' Gordon Hall, Belfast, Wools ton and Templeton. Belfast and Boys’ Gordon Hall are the only teams without a deteat so lar, while Woolston and Templeton haVe one each. Advice has been received from Wellington that second’ and third grade teams visit Christchurch at the New Year.’ Failing the Wellington teams coming south the association will send teams north.
