BOROUGH COUNCILS.

WOOLSTON. Iho Woolston Borough Council met last night; present—The .Mayo- tMr C. Hill) and Councillors T. E. Radchfc, T. N. Champ, 1' 0. Hobson, IV. R. Blazey, G. T. Owen, •B- MRae and L, M. Hart. , , e Finance Committee reported a debit oalance at the bank of £2643 4s 3d. and the temporary loans amounted to £539 18s Id. ihe £3OO debenture for the Chichester Street loan had l>&en sold. The report vras adopted, and accounts amounting to £315 18s 9d were passed for payment. , Uie Electricity Committee reported that -e additional houses had been wired at a cost of £77 18s and orders were on hand lor wiring ton other houses. The report was adopted. Baths Commitfoc recommended that r Hooper should bo appointed caretaker of ‘ a ® bath; that the bath should be painted and the season opened on November 1. It was decided to congratulate the Ganteroury Progress League on the excellent manner in which it conducted the motor mail service* during the period of the railway curtailment.

The Railway Department wrote with reference to the council's complaint regarding too nuisance caused by tho smoke from tho engine sheds at Lmwood. stating that everything possible had been done to oope with the nuisance, and agreeing to see that as ntUe inconvenience as possible was caused tn the future.

After discussion, it was decided to reply stating taat the council regarded the Department a letter as unsatisfactory, and that it considered stops should bo taken to abate tho nuisance altogether. The Canterbury Automobile Association wrote drawing the attention of tho council to a dangerous corner leading on to Regent btreet, coming over Radley" bridge. Tho letter was referred to the Works' Committee.

A circular letter was received from the >v anganni Borough Council embodying a resolution carried by that body, protesting against tho proposal to reinstate Mr von Zealitz as professor of modem languages at Victoria College, Wellington. It was unanimously decided to endorse the resolution.

A letter was received from Mr H. G-. Ell, M.P., asking for a donation towards the Summit Road Association. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee. A petition signed by fifty residents was received, asking tho council to take the necessary steps to remove a nuisance which was said to be caused by the emission cf fumes from tho chemical works of a tannery company. Consideration of the matter was adjourned for a fortnight. SUMNER. The regular meeting of tho Sumner Borough Council was heid last night ; present — tho Mayor (the Hon J. Barr, iLL.C.i and Councillors T. Dryburgh, il, C. S. Jamieson, F. H. Picrcy, H. J. Vales, C. M. Rosweii, F. Gill, C. Benjamin and T. E. Whiifield. Correspondence was received from tho New Brighton Borough Council respecting tho Domains Board levy, stating that the support offered by the various meal bodies did not warrant the council taking any further action. The letter was received. The Redcliffs .Library wrote thanking the council for increasing the gxent to the funds. The Wanganui Borough Council wrote asking for the council’s cooperation in resisting the appointment of Professor von Zedlitz as professor at Victoria College. The letter was received.

The health officer wrote with regard to the remodelling of the drainage system at the i School for the Deaf, ana suggesting that the scheme should be connected with the present drainage system. It was referred to the ! The report was adopted It was resolved to protect the main road between the Pratt Street tram stop and the boatsheds by erecting a stone waif of about half a chain in length. As this would also protect the Tramway Board's property it was decided to ask the Tramway Board’ to hear half the expense. ASHBURTON. . A{ jl'" 6 fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council, held last night the -layer (Mr R. Galoraitn) reported that the total overdraft now stood at £11,693 12s 3d, and tnat the receipts since last meeting had amounted to £327 4s Id.

A letter was read from Messrs A. end T. Burt, Dunedin, asking for a progress payment of £3OO on account of their contract for the supply of pipes f or the Netherbv portion oi the borough’s high-pressure water supply. The Prime Minister wrote acknowledging fbe council’s resolution with reference to the ‘ Government providing housing accommodation for the employees in the Justice, Postal and Railway Departments, end stating that the wholo question was now receiving the attention of tho Government, and fliat special provision* were being made fo? civil servants. The Hon W. Nosworthy, Minister of Aericuhure,. wrote acknowledging the conncihs resolution with reference to the Time and stating that it would receive his careful considerstionThe Department of Agriculture wrote stating that any bona fide licensed butcher could procure any meat he required from any of the freezing works. Mr H. H. Allan, agricultural service master ct the Ashburton High School forwarded an invitation to tho members of the council to bo present at a meeting of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute to bo held at Ashburton at the end of the month. The Wanganui Borough Council wrote asking tho council to support a resolution which had been passed protesting against the proposal to reinstate Professor von Zedlitz as professor of modern languages at Victoria College. The Ashburton Technical School Cricket Club wrote asking to be allotted a portion of the Domain for ft cricket ground. Tho By-laws and Finance Committee recommended that the portions of tho railwayreserve in East Street extending from Burnett Street to TancrecL Street and from Tattered Street to Moore Street bo set aside as stands for private motor-cars, and that tho wide culverts be removed from the railway reserve in East Street, extending from Burnett Street to Havelock Street, to prevent this piece of ground bring used as a stand for cars. It was further recommended that no license be granted to the driver of any licensed carriage unless such driver shall have been resident in the borough, the Hampstead town district, tho Tinwald town district or the Ashburton County during the whole of tho month immediately preceding the date of application for such license. It was decided to grant the Hospital Board’s application for asphalt footpath and channelling in front of the hospital.
