CHILD LABOUR.
A TRUANT OFFICER’S REPORT. [Pia Press Association.] DUNEDIN, August 21. At a meeting of the Education Board the Truant Officer reported that the practice of empl<jying children at such early hours in the morning as to interfere with school work was increasing. He had written to the Minister of Education suggesting that a conference of truant officers be held to bring the . position before the Minister. Approximately 200 children from seven to fourteen years of age worked on milk carts for two to five hours before attending school, their pay ranging from 3s 6d to 10s. The position was . worst in Caversham, Green Island, and NorthEast \ alley. The hoard decided to draw the attention of the Minister to the Department’s promise, in 1918. that the subject would be taken up,' and to ask what had been dona. !
