CARRIAGE OF TIMBER.
j [Pek Press Association*.] ! I WELLINGTON, August 12. Replying to a statement that though the North Island railways have ceased to carry timber the Greymouth railway service is kept extremely busy' conveying millions of feet of red and white pine for shipment to Australia, the Hon TV. H. Henries said the cut had not been made so severe on the West Coast because there was plenty of coal there always and timber was carried there, but one of the reasons for this was that in no case had the timber tc bo carried long distances. The question whether timber ought to be exported Was one for decision by the Forestry Department. The Minister pointed out however, that ships bringing coal to New Zealand from Australia might want a back load of cargo, and timber was the only commodity in great bulk from this country to Australia. j ~
