Corporal Thompson enlisted as a signaller m October, 1915, and sailed with the Ninth Reinforcements in January, 1916. He was .severely wounded the following September whilst on duty in France. In April, 1917, he returned to the front, in tko capacity of -motor dispatch rider, and was promoted in _ July, 1918, advancing to Cologne with the. New Zealand forces when the armistice■ was sighed;
