THE WATERWAY.

ON AND OFF THE RIVER. . , (By'JASON.) - The first series of club races are now over and crows aro about to commence training for Akaroa regatta, to bo held on December 16. Although the crews wore picked over a week ago, very little has been seen of them on the river up to the present. The Union Rowing Club's crews for Akaroa regatta are:—-Senior Pairs—F. Allen, H. Bliss. Youths' Four—L. Duggan, L. Durey, A. B. Hobbe, J. Davis (str). Junior Double Sculls—T. .Hobbs and T. Booth (str).' Maiden Four—W. Parnell, L. Freeman, W. Mercer ,and V. Tims (str). Senior Double Sculls—H. Dallison and S. E. Moore. Youths' Double Soulls— A. B. Hobbs and J. Davis. Junior Four —T. Hobbs, A. Priest, H. Laytou and A. Empson (str). This crew is last year's maiden four, who were unbeaten throughout the season. Maiden Double Sculls—L. Freeman and W. Mercer.

Tho programme of Akaroa regatta, which is to bo submitted to the Canterbury Rowing Association at an early date, contains eight rowing events. The programme will probably run in the following order:— No. 1 Event—Pair-oar Race in bcst-and-best boats; first prize £9, second £l.

No. 1 Event—Youths' Fours; first prize £B, second prize £2. No. 3 Event—Junior Double Sculls; first prizo £7, seooiid prizo £2.

No. 4 Event—Maiden Fours; first prize £B, second prize £2. No. 5 Event—Pair-oar Race, in best-and-best boats: first prize £9, second £2.

No. 6 Event—Youths' Double Sculls; first prize £6, second £l. No. 7 Event—Junior Fours; first prize £lO, second prize £2. No. 8 Event—Maiden Double Sculls; first prize £7, second prize £2. No mention is as yet made of a Senior Four Race. I hear that there is an impression in Aka.roa that it is the intention of the Canterbury Rowing Association to ask tho Regatta Committee to row tho Senior Fours in clinker built boats, and that they aro expecting a letter to that effect. I have not been able to ascertain it' the secretary of the Association has had.any instructions regarding this matter, but I understand the matter was discussed some time ago, but only referred to Christchurch Regatta. Tho Akaroa people, I believe, aro much opposed to rowing senior events in clinker boats. In connection with the Lyttelton regatta a cup is being presented by Mra Colin Cook, of Lyttelton, for the clnb gaining most points in senior races. This is a splendid idea on the part of Mrs Cook, and besides tending to encourage senior rowing greatly at Lyttelton regatta, her gift will be very muclP-appreciated by all interested in rowing. Tho Canterbury Rowing Club has selected its Youths' and Maiden Fours for Akaroa regatta, but I have not yot heard of tho Junior Four or Doublo Sculling crews. The Fours are:— Youths'—No. 1: R. Gudgeon, T. L. Burns, K. Butters and R. Cudden. No. 2: J. Fairhurn, L. Bishop, AV. Beaumont and W. Strouths. Maiden Four —No. 1 crew? N. Simo (stroke). L. Gulden, C. Hill and M. Guthrie. Tho youths are undergoing a course of tubbing and will probably appear in the fours next week.
