GISBORNE, March 21

The various public works that aro being carried on in Uisborno give a fair indication of tho rapidly advancing prosperity of tho town. Tho municipal electric light and power were formally switched on last night at a public ceremony. . Tt was/announced on Tuesday that the laying of tho rails for the electric trams would be commenced on Monday week, .and that tho preliminary work in connection with tho extension of the breakwater had been completed. A company has been formed to construct a modern Opera House, and another theatre is also to bo built, making three for tho town. Work at this end of the Napier-Gis-borne railway line is being pushed rapidly ahead, and the borough sewerage works, which aro on an extensive scale, liavo been almost completed. "The building trade is exceptionally busy at present," reports the borough building inspector. "If all the works anticipated are brought out our town will bo the busiest in proportion to its size in the dominion. There are no loss than sixty-threo jobs under way. of which thirty-one are dwellings, and I am glad to state that all are being carried out well up to the by-laws. Since the first of the month twenty-seven permits have been issued, including six dwellings, to the value of £2589, ten additions to dwellings £O9l ]os. two stables £(i80. nine sundry jobs £274 10s, the total valuo being £4135. The town has entered upon wonderful prosperity, and there is a pronounced shortage of labour."
