MAORI CHIEF'S DEATH. [Per Pbess Association.] AUCKLAND, August 6. A Maori chief, named Hemi Taj. "Whanga, died suddenly in the bar oi the Waitemata Hotel yesterday. When he entered he was asked what he wanted and replied, "I want nothing. !■ want only drinks for my friends."'Immediately he tumbled backwards and. ' expired in a few minutes. At the inquest this morning the evidence showed, that death was due to natural causes.

INVEROARGILL, August 6. A married woman named Frances Glover, aged twenty-six, who with fourchildren arrived, from Tasmania a mcnth ago, died under peculiar circumstances at the Bluff. It was stated that she had admitted to a neighbour that she had. taken bitter apple. At' the inquest the Coroner returned a verw diet that she had died by misadventure through taking an overdose of colocynth.

An inquest * regarding the death of Sidney Phipps, an old man who died'; in the Hospital yesterday afternoon was held this afternoon by Mr H. "W." Bishop, District Coroner. The evidence." showed that deceased hs.d been' employed for many years by" Messrs A. J. White and Co.', and while laying carpets in the" D.I.C. at about midday on complained of cramps. He was: taken to the Hospital, and died half an hour later, death being due to ; the brain, according to Dr G. W. Gower, who had made a pest-mortem examination. The Coroner returned a verdict to this effect.
