RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

' Thursday. £h& morning broke dull and Uureatening, but it remained 1 fine. A light shower of rain fell overnight, and improved the tracks, waich were in oapita-l order. Practioally all of the work, which was of a fairly interesting character, was accomplished on the trial grass gallop. Martyrium was again the first out, and she reeled off six furlongs in lrain 18seo. Glenculloch (light-weight) traversed a mil© and a. quarter from a walking up start, in 2min ISsec, the laafc mil© of which occupied lmin 45sec. He finished particularly well, and his effort was entirely satisfactory- Goldbeater (Jones) and Stratagem (light-weight) dashed over seven furlongs in lmin 29sec the latter having the better of the go. Helianthes defeated Mercy by several lengths over a mile, run in lmin 46Jseo, while Contender, looking well, compassed two steady circuits on the plough. Jones), Signor (light-weight), Lapland' (lightweight) and Somaxoff set out for a gallop over ten furlongs. Getting away on fairly equal terms, the first-named pair soon established a length's l&ad', which they continued to increase, and half way down the straight the quartette w«re well "strung out. Gwendolina finishing up her task in the pleasing manner that has characterised all her essays during the past two weeks, was five lengths ahead of Zimmerman, with Signor several lengths further away, Lapland next., and Somaroff beaten off. The time for the full journey was 2min 12sec, the first six furlongs of which was run in lmin 19seo. Zimmerman, who would be carrying fully his Autumn Handicap impost, is recognised to be a poor track horse, and his performance was satisfactory. Petrovna, (V. Cotton) easily defeated Tessera over half a mile, run in 60sec, while Flitaway brushed over five furlongs. Clanchatfcan galloped a mile, the last six furlongs of whioh ocoupied lmin 18sec. White Cock, ade dashed over a mile in lmin 48seo — a pleasing performance ; and Volodia and Nightlight were to have galloped half a mile together, but the latter broke away, and spoiled the gallop. Volodia was then allowed to run home from the half-mile easily, in 62Jsec. They subsequently galloped half a mile, Volodia finishing several lengths ahead, in sOssec.

After breakfast Amboi&e ran a mile comfortably in lniin 46seo. Jacket took lmin 47seo to complete a similar distance on the plough, and Ability ran eight furlongs in lmin 52Jsec, tiring 1 perceptibly at the finish. Btiocleuch traversed a mile easily on the plough, in lmin 46 2-sse<s, and Medallist and Gold Braid, who were given long steady pacing, subsequently spurted half a mile, Medallist showing to most advantage. Devonia galloped a mile, the last seven furlongs of which ocoupied lmin 33 2-58(*c. Prim (Museon.) dashed over seven furlongs from practically a standing start, in lmin 30sec — a very attractive performance. The Libyan (Hack) and All Guns (M'Clusky) were well matched in a spin over six furlongs, run in lmin 17sec. Tremulous (Scoulkr), who started with them, finished some distance away. Eurus and Canton traversed' a mile and a half in 2min 56sec, the former pleasing most. Cross Battery (L. King) and Sea King (C. EmraerBon) broke> away at the mile post. The lastnamed, getting over a length's advantage a* the start, made the pace a cracker. Ho reached the half-milo in 48 2-ssec, and, continuing, he finished up the mile in lmin 41seo. a brilliant effort, althoitgh taking into consideration the very light impost he was carrying and the flying start, it was nothing sensational. Cross Baitery was eased up after going half a. mile, which she was timed to run in 50 l-sseo. Shimmer finished m front of English Rose and Salaam, m a ppm over five furlongs, run in lmin 5 l-ssec.
