SHOP, OFFICE AND WAREHOUSE ASSISTANTS' INDUSTRIAL UNION.

The two committees appointed at the first meeting of this Union to prepare rules and draft conditions, met on Monday night at the Trades and Labour Council Hall. Rules were drafted on similar lines to those existing for other Unions, and the entrance fee was fixed at Is. Considerable time was spent by the large representative committee in drafting conditions relating to hours of labour and wage 3 for the different branches concerned. This rough draft will come up for discussion at a full meeting of the Union, to be called for Thursday, April 23, when both members and intending members will be invited to attend. It was stated at this meeting that competent" warehouse clerks, with a thorough knowledge of typewriting and shorthand, were receiv» ing as wages £4 per calendar month, and the head clerk in one establishment was getting a remuneration of £6' per calendar month, while married men (shop assistants) were, in one particular shop, receiving 20s. and 25s per week and commission on sales. It is intended at the full meeting to set up representative sub-committees for every branch of work included under the above heading of industrial distributing workers. These committees will go carefully into the hours of labour and wages affecting their own particular classes, and then meet as one committee to draft general conditions.
