CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON

The internrovincial match between Canterbury and Wellington was started at Lancaster Ptfrk this afternoon. A oold, bleak sou-wester blew overnight, and the morning broke to an accompaniment of driving showers or rain. For a time it seemed as if cricket would not be possible, but before midday the clouds blew over, and the after-

noon, although cold, was clear and sunny. The wicket was good but easy. The teams are as follows : — Canterbury. — A. Anthony, K. Bain? J. H. Bennett, C. Boxshall, K. Ollivier, J. D. Lawrence, W. Patrick, T. W. Reese, R. Ridley, H. B. Whitta and K. S. Williams. Wellington. — Upham, Cobcroft, Mahoney, Laws, Hales, S. Hickson, Tucker, Beechey, Collins, Hawthorne and M ; Dei-mid. The attendance was poor. T. W. Reese captained the local team and Tucker took command of the visitors. Owing to the lateness of the Mararoa there was some delay in starting the match, which should have begun at 2 p.m., and ultimately Wellington started batting- three men short. The Wellington skipper won tho tees, and elected to bat. Cobcroft and Collins opened the Wellington innings, Bennett and Ollivier taking up the bowling for Canterbury. Cobcroft took strike to Ollivier, who bowled a maiden. Bennett also started witli a maiden. Play was very slow, both batsmen playing a strictly defensive game. The ground was very dead and runs came slowly. Twenty-live minutes' play only produced 11 runs, Ollivier sending down five maidens cut of six overs. After forty minutes' . play, with t3ie score at 20, Cobcroft was smartly oaught at the wickets off Bennett. 20—1 — 7. Beechey, a left-hander, joined Collins. The Canterbury fielding was faulty. After scoring two Beechey was easily caught at short leg by Williams off Bennett. 24 — 2 — 2. Mahoney came next, and after scoring one retired leg before to Ollivier. 27—3—1. Hawthorne succeeded, and four byes were run, bringing 30 up as the ..result of an hour's play, and Ollivier then bowled Hawthorne with a fast leg break. 31 4 0. Tucker came next, and the soore was slowly taken to 43, when Tucker was caught by Ridley in the slips in trying to play one of Ollivier's breaks to leg. 48 5 6. Laws was next in. Laws drove Ollivier for five, one of which came \ rom an overthrow, and 50 showed. At 60, Williams went on in. place of Ollivier. At 64, Laws was bowled by Bennett. 64—6—12. With Upham, Blacklock and Hales not yet arrived M'Dermid joined Collins, who hit the first boundary of the day, driving Bennett hard -to the off. M'Dermid brought 70 up by hitting the fast bowler to the on-boundary. Williams bawled M'Dermid with a no-ball, and the batsman retaliated by driving the next ball for four. At 86, Ollivier replaced Williams. At 90, M'Dermid gave an easy chance of stumping, but Boxahall lost the ball. Ridley relieved Bennett at 93, and the century showed after two and a quarter hours' play. Pour run® later M'Dermid hit Ollivier high to Bennett, who took an easy catch. 104—7—20. The partnership had added 40 runs at a critical period. In the interim the missing Wellingtonians had arrived, and Blacklock was next in. His stay was short, for Ollivier bowled him with his second ball. 105 — B—o.8 — 0. Upham succeeded, and Collins had a narrow escape of being run out. With 112 showing, Bennett went on again in place of Ollivier, who changed over. The change was effective, for ten runs later Upham hit Ollivier tamely to Anthony at inid-on. 122—9 — 9.' Hales was last man, and, after scoring four, was badly run out. The innings closing at 5.25 for 131. With twenty minutes to play, Canterbury made a disastrous start. Tlie innings was opened with Williams and Patrick, Ollivier having injured his thumb, Tucker and Upham being entrusted with the boiling. Tucker opened to Patrick, and when one run had been scored, Williams was bowled by Tucker. I— l— o. Ridley followed. Both batsmen played strictly on the defensive, and five minutes before time Cobcroft was tried in Tucker's place. The change was effective, Ridley being at once caught and bowled by Cobcroft. 5 — 2 — 3. Bain was next in, and Laws took an ineffective over at the pavilion end.
