AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND.

THE ESSEX MATCH. United Press Association — By Eleotrib Telegraph — Copyright. (Received June 24, 9.51 a.m.)

LONDON, June 23. The weather was^ again fine, with a fast wicket, but when the game was resumed the attendance was only moderate. M'Lecd again kept wickets, and Howell fielded as substitute for Newland. M'Gahey, when he had scored 18, gave a chance in the slips, which was not accepted. Russell was disposed of in Noble's first over. The" partnership had lasted forty minutes. Four wickets for 55. M'Gahey was smartly caught by Darling at shortleg. Ho had been at the wickets for an hour and thirty-five minutes, and had given three chances, the last two being rather awkward ones to Gehrs at deep mid-on. Five wickets for 85. Gillingham, when he had made 13, returned one to Layer, which was not accepted. However, he was taken almost immediately afterwards by Noble at point. Six wickets for 106. Tossetti was dismissed in attempting to turn a straight ball from Noble. Seven wickets for 110. Perrin was neatly caught by Duff low down at mid-off, before either he had scored or the total had been increased. Reeves and. Douglas were now associated, and the partnership lasted fifty minutes, during whicE time they altered the aspect of affairs, carrying the total to 175. Before Reeves gave Duff an easy catch at mid-off he had hit six fours, chiefly hard drives. Buckenham joined Douglas, and the newcomer hit up his score quickly. Douglas was scoring more slowly. Eventually the latter, standing back to Cotter, touched one which M'Leod accepted, and the innings, which had occupied three hours and thirteen minutes, was brought to a close. (Received June 24, 2 p.m.) Requiring 222 to win, the Australians began their second innings. Duff succumbed to a full-pitched ball in the second over. . One for 4. Hill was taken easily, at mid-off. Two for 28. Darling played Tremlin on after batting an hour. Noble got eleven off one of Buckenham's overs, but as a rule this bowler was found awkward to play. The fielding being too smart kep]b the runs -down.-: Three wickets 'were down for 50, and Gregory being disposed of at the second ball, four were down for 56. Noble played a judicious, skilful innings, and hit five fours during sixtyfive minutes at the wickets. At 18 he was badly missed by Tossetti at third man off Tremlin. Five for 97. Cotter, playing back to Tremlin, lost hie wioket. Six for 113. Hopkins and Newland played out time. , The following are the scores:-^ i ESSEX. First Innings.
