CHRISTCHUECH. Saturday. Jan. 4. OSefore Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) Dbttnkenn'ess. — Patrick McGinn, John Riddle Kerr, George Corry and Mary McLauchlin were each fined 10s and costs for being drunk on Jan. 3. — Two male first offenders were each fined ss, with the alternative of forty-eight hours' imprisonment. — Annie Fraser, and a female offender who had not been charged with drunkenness for some time, were, on the representation of Mrs, Cunnington, convicted and discharged Julia Parkins, who had been drunk in Lincoln Road, was convicted and discharged, on the understanding that she went to the Samaritan home. Theft prom a Bookmaker. — Lawrence Taylor was charged with the theft of £2 from Edward John Ross, on Jan. 1, at Addington. From the evidence for tha prosecution, it appeared that Ross was plying his trade of betting on the racecourse at Addington on Jan. 1. One Henry Heekett save Ross ss«. as a waccer on % horss named Duf k, the odds being 7 to 1. The animal won, and HeskettV dividend should have been £2. The entry in Ross's book was "H.H. 55," and this amount was collected from Ross .by one Sleeroan, who alleged he had. been instructed to do so by the accused. The accused denied the charge, but was sentenced to, three month*' imprisonment. Theft. — Alexander Bruce Malcolm and Alfred Peter Peterson, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing, at Cheviot, between Dec. 20 and 25, fro-m the dwellinghouse of Robert Sloss, the property of Robert Isbister, were brought up for sentence. Mr Bishop said; he would give the boys one more chnnce, and intended sending them to. Burnham. There was no excuse for their action, and in any future case in which they appeared 'before him h,e would send .them to gaol. Had it not been for the fact that Mr Arclicy gave them a fair character, he- would have dealt otherwise with them. Peterson was ordered-to restore £10 10s to Isbister, from the moneyhe had in the bank, while Malcolm was required to pay £4 10s> to Isbister according as he earned it.
