HENRY GAIN.

A very old Canterbury resident, Mr Henry Gain, was found dead on Ms doorstep at Amberley by Mr W.» Midgeley, at an early hour this morning. Mr Gain' had been in bad. health for some time, and it is supposed that in* coming out of his house this morning he had a sudden seizure. Mr Gain, who had never been married, came to Christchurch in 1862. In the following year ,he joined the firm of Messrs Walton, Warner and Co., as clerk and salesman. On that firm giving up business he joined the firm of Messrs Cobb and Sawtell, and remained after the Business .was merged into that of Messrs Wilson, Sawtell and Co., for many years occupying a responsible position in the* goods department. When this firm retired from business he started on his own acoount as a wine and spirit merchant in Cbiristchttrch, 'and earned on the business for several years, eventually selling out to Messrs T. J. Maling and Co. He then purchased the auctioneering business previously carried on by Messrs Beam and Co. at Anniberley, which he still carried on at the time of his death. During his residence at Amberley Mr Gain was the local representative of Messrs Dalgety and Co. and also of the "Lyttelton Times." Mr Gain was very well known in athletic circles in the eaily days, having been one of the founders and a most enthusiastic member of the Union Rowing Club, as well as a prominent footballer.
