. 4 : — • . Grass fires were lit in various parts of the Malvern district on Fr.day morning, and when the north-we3t gale arose the flames swept over hills and valleys for many miles. Messrs Gordy Bros., Baxter, and Deana lost much fencing, and only by great efforts were Mr Baxter's homestead and a house near Homebush saved from destruction. Early on Sunday morning a boarding-' house, occupied by Sirs Rainey, opposite the railway shed 3, East Street, Ashburton, was burnt to the ground. The house was insured for .£350 and the furniture and effects for i£lso, the Standard and Norwich Union being the offices interested. Several lodgers lost valuable. 0 .
