FIRES.
.Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, March 22. A house at Mayfield, inland from Birkenhead, was burned down. The house was in charge of a caretaker, who was absent at the time, and was owned by Peter Oliphant. The house was insured in the Alliance Office for £400 and the furniture for __240. The origin of th 6 fire is unknown. The insurance companies paid Paltridge and Woollams, tobacconists, .£9OOO, insurance owing on the D.S.C. fire. A fire broke out in the crew's quarters 6n dredger No. 121 this evening when only the engineer was on board. The ferry steamer Britannia, on seeing tlie flames, put off to the dredger and suppressed the fire, after- playing on it with her hose for half-an-hour. The crew's quarters were gutted and the men's clothes destroyed. The dredge is uninjured.
