ROAD BOARDS.

AVON. The monthly meeting of this Board was held on March 14 ; present — Messrs Burgess (chairman), and Messrs M. Hawken, W. Homer, I. Parish and E. Spencer. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From the Selwyn County Council asking the Board to lay broken metal immediately at the end of the decking of "White's Bridge; the work 'to 1 be done. From Mr E. Colernan, asking for an additional sum of iUforworkdoneinclearingout the culvert on the North Koad. The Board decided not to comply with the request." From the Commissioner of Taxes, stating that, a voucher had been sent to the Treasury for payment of the balance of the 1896-7 subsidy, and from the Union Bank saying that the money had been paid to the credit of the Board's account. Eeceived. Tenders for the supply of boulders advertised for were received, and that of Mr T. Eyan was accfipted; also tenders for the supply of black birch timber, and that of Messrs Eyde Bros., West Oxfcrd, was accepted. It was resolved that the Board should take the necessary steps to close the road between Eural Section 14636 and the City Council reserve and E.S. 22075 and through B.S. 14423, and exchange it for a road through E.S. 22075, in pursuance of the arrangement made ou Oct. 12, 1896. A fortnight's leave of absence was granted to the Clerk on account of illness. The finance report showed the debit balance at the bank to be .£167 19s 9d ; receipts during the month .£226 6s sd. Accounts amounting to .£625 5s 6d were passed for payment, and the meeting closed. KICCAKTON. The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Monday, March 14, at the office, Fendalton ; present — Messrs Nun week, Jackson, Beckett and Deans. An apology was read for the absence of Mr Boag. The following correspondence was read: From Messrs Wilding and Lewis (in reply) as to the duties of the cattle ranger; the Board resolved to act on their solicitors' advice and to instruct the ranger accordingly. From the Avon Koad Board, requesting a contribution in aid of clearing the Kaputone Creek. Deferred for the report of the surveyor. From Mr Walker, requesting pei mission to take a few loads of shingle from thereserve for private, use. Granted.. From Mr Lane as to. lease of Reserve 323. It Was 'resolved -to. reply that .the Board" would require the gorse and- broom now growing on the- reserve to be cleared off. From Mr H. 1 Eaton, applying for, permission to lay pipes across the Mill Koad so as to I'onhect with the creek. It was resolved to grant the request conditionally. From the Valuer-General, asking if the' Board would require a copy of the valuation roll, in terms of the Government Valuation of Land Act, 1896. It was resolved to reply that the Board would require a copy. From the Paymaster-General, Wellington, advising payment of balance of subsidy for the year '1896-97. From Messrs Ollivier Bros., on behalf of Mr Inwood, requesting that the ditch on the Middleton Road should be cleaned out. It was resolved to refer MesErs Ollivier to the Board's letter fo August 10 last. From Colonel Babington, as to trespass of a bull on the public road. The Clerk stated that the matter had been referred to the Banger. Tenders were received for supplying metal for the main roads and for gravelling by-roads, and one was accepted in each case. Complaints were made that the railway iron telephone poles lately being used on roads in the district were very dangerous to travellers. The Board was of opinion that these poles as at present placed were very objectionable, and should be erected at the back of the footpaths, instead of the front, wherever possible ; also, that they should be painted white, and it was resolved that the Clerk should communicate with the Department on the matter. The Clerk reported that the gas lamps on the Harewood Eoad were in very bad order and worn out, and that they were constantly being broken by boys. It was resolved to procure new lamps and to call the attention of tke police to the matter. It was resolved to instruct the Board's solicitors to take legal proceedings to abate the nuisance on premises at Strowan. The Surveyor's report was read and approved. The collector reported that, as directed, five summonses had been issued for outstanding rates. The report was adopted. After passing accounts the Board rose.
