ACCIDENTS AND EATALITIES.
[Per Peess Association.! DUNEDIN, Jan. 28. A riderless horse, bolting from George Street, knocked down a hansom cab driver named Joseph Pring while he wa; standing on the rank in Princes Streel this afternoon. Pring was removed tc the hospital, where ho was found -to be suffering from fracture of the base of the skull. A narrow escape from drowning occurred near Wilson's Bridge on Thursday after, noon. A child named Gertrude Cockburn, aged six, was playing by the Heathcote and accidentally fell in, and was carried tc the other side of the river.. The watei being about 6ft deep, the child "struggled in vain. The child's sister, Miss Cockburn, of Woolston, was on the bank, and cried for help. Her cries brought a young lad named Robert Carter, employed at Mi Anderson's, St Martin's, who inimediatelj jumped in, and succeeded in bringing th« child to the bank. Young Carter's promptitude undoubtedly saved the child from ar tratimely death.
