THE SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATIONS.
0. Tlie Inspectors of the North Canterbury Education Board submitted the following report at to-day's meeting :— " We have the honour to submit the return of the Board's Scholarship Examinations held at the Normal School on Dec. 15, 1896, and following days. In the Senior Class the first six on the list are — Marade Herriott, Girls' High School ; John G. Lancaster, Boys' High School.; Rachel Kain, Girls' High School; Mabel E. Osborn, Girls' High School *, John F. H. Carpenter, Boys' High School ; F. Alexander, Boys' High School. All these are qualified to receive scholarships. The next on the list is F. D. Banks, Boys' High School, who is only one mark behind, and if the Board's regulations and finances permit the grant of an additional scholarsliip Aye recommend his claim to favourable consideration. In tke Junior Class 176 candidates were examined (boys 106, girls 70), a further small increase in the number of candidates may be noted. More discretion was needed in the matter of candidates entering for these examinations. While ji large entry was desirable it was inadvisable that any but those who •were fairly well up in the various subjects should compete. In many cases not even ' the most favourable j\idgnient of the abilities and attainments of some of the children could anticipate that they would be successful in securing even the 25 per cent qualification in each subject. The sending up of unqualified children for examination is only a source of expense to the Board and useless trouble to the examiners. The first twelve on the list of the junior class are: — Charles L. Piner, Annat; Elsie Evans, Christchurcli West-, Clara Firth; .Christchurch West; William P. Prebble, JFlemington; Nora Smythe, Fendal•<fcon, and Nichol Webster, Southbridge, (equal) ; Ernest Dawson, Normal rSchool; William T. Doig, Christ.cbm'eh West ; Arthur T.Robinson, Normal School; William Loader, Sydenham; Victor Curtis, New Brighton, John M. Withers, Southbridge. Of the successful candidates in their class, two come in by virtue of the year's advantage granted tc pupils of country schools. Among th. candidates, 64 have come from such schools and 112 from schools of tho largei type." ' The Board decided to grant scholarships to the six senior and twelve junior candidates who head the list, requested tht Chairman to report on the case of F. D Banks, and instructed the Secretary tc send circulars to chairmen of committees and head teachers, drawing their attentioi: to the clause which suggested that mordiscretion should be shown in sending ir only those who might be deemed to be pre pared.
