y - Third Eound. The third round of, the New Zealand Chess Tourney is being played to-day. The following are details of the play up to the luncheon adjournment : — Board 1. — Edwards (Dunedin) v. Hookham (Canterbury). The Petroff Defence was adopted by Hookharo, who gained a Pawn on the 18th move, and the ganie is fairly even otherwise. Board 2.— Barnes (Wellington Working Men's Club) v. Mason (Wellington). Mason used the French Defence, and Barnes having a good attack, matters were slightly in his favour. Board 3.— Cocks (Wellington) v. Andersen (Canterbury). The Euy Lopez opening was adopted at this board. Cocks has a decided advantage. Board 4. — Pleasants (Eangitikei) v. Mellor (Dunedin). After a Euy Lopez oj>ening, Pleasants gained a Pawn on the 12th move. Soon afterwards Mellor gave up the exchange for an attack, which proved unsound, and in a strong counter attack Pleasants forced his opponent to resign on the 28th move. Board s.— Gifford (Eangitikei) v. Meldrum. At this board the Scotch. Gambit was played, and there is little to choose between the opponents. Grierson (Auckland) a bye.
