CRICKET.

[Per Press Association.] ADELAIDE, Dec. 29. The Register's version of the attempt to tamper with the cricket pitch in the recent intercolonial match is that about 2 a.m. the watchman saw • two men, who had apparently climbed the fence, stealthily cross the ground, and ordered them off. One obeyed, but the other struck the watchman a severe blow on the mouth. The guardian of the Oval retaliated, and after giving his assailant his deserts, opened the gates and the man walked away. The visit may have been prompted by harmless motives, but the watchman believes otherwise. In response to a request made by Messrs G. J. Smith and T. E. Taylor, M.H.R.'s, the Premier has decided to close the Government offices in Christchurch for half a day on Friday, Jan. 8, on the occasion of the match, Queensland v. Canterbury.
