PUBLIC MEETING AT KAIAPOI.
Last evening Mr J. D. Sievwright j addressed a very large meeting in the Oddfellows' Hall, Kaiapoi, on " The Fallacies of Prohibition, &c." The Mayor presided, and, in introducing the lecturer, expressed his pleasure at meeting Mr Sievright. The lecturer, who was greeted with applause, spoke for two hours on the various aspects of Prohibition, recounting facts which went to prove that wherever prohibition had been tried failure had been the result. Mr Sievwright related some amusing anecdotes which were "enjoyed by the audience, who, it was evident, were not all of one opinion. The lecture was delivered inafair and straightforward manner, Mr Sievwright having a pleasing style of delivery, and being most civil to his opponents. Messrs Eagle, Ward, R. Evans and others asked questions which were readily answerorl, after which a vote of thanks to the lecturer was carried, a vote proposed by Jllr R. Evans in favour of local option being declared negatived. This was one of the most orderly meetings ever held in Kaiapoi.
