NEW BRIGHTON.

— +• [By Te Kurapa.] Last Saturday the New 'Brighton Tennis Club played the College Club and wore defeated. The attendance was large, and the games of an interesting nature. During -the season, tho New Brighton Tennis Club -will play against other clubs, and players here will do their best to maintain their prestige. So many cottages have sprung up during the last few weeks that it has given the place quite a new appearance. Mi- W. Stokes intends erecting two handsome villas on Lonsdale Street, and building operations here are decidedly brisk. Naturally, borough matters form the leading topic. After the necessary notice is gazetted, there will be renewed interest ; the ratepayers will be called upon to choose their mayor and councillors. The meeting held last -week was the preliminary canter, but judging by what transpired there, certain ratepayers will apply the brake if necessary. j Ostensibly it was for the consideration of Borough matters that the meeting was held, but political feelers were being thrown out, with what amount of success those present can easily estimate. v Saturday afternoon last the local cricketers opened the season. A capital afternoon's sport was provided for. old and young, and it augurs well for a successful season that so many enthusiastic players faced the bowling. Messrs Thomson, Sefton, Slater and M'Haffy trundled, and the vigorous batting of Messrs Thomson, Mullins, Lester, Sefton and others was good to see. When the concrete pitch is | laid down, there will .be frequent i matches. Visitors are numerous, houses are at a high premium, and the general indications are exceedingly bright. The coming sale of town sections will doubtless mean advancement and an increase of buildings on Sea View Eoad. Splendid prices are obtainable for good sections anywhere in the district — an infallible sign of prosperity. Election matters are apparently quiet, but things are not quite what they seem. When each candidate openly announces himself the business will commence in earnest. Parties here are not yet defined. Keport says that various candidates "will contest the scat, but we must wait and see, and then work and vote. | Tho Sailing Club fellows will hold their annual gathering round the festive board ! on Saturday evening. Politics are eschewed at this fixture, but the sailing men will | have plenty of items to fill the bill. The company ■will be numerous and happy. Success to the New Brighton Sailing Club, and a prosperous season.
