CHRISTCHURCH BUILDERS' SOCIETY.
♦ A meeting of this society was held on Saturday night in the rooms of the National Association, Gloucester Street; present— Mr W. Jacques (in the chair), Messrs F. Turvey, K. F. England (England and Martin), J. Harrison, J. Greig, E. L. Scott (D. Scott and Son), W- Smith, S. P. Andrews, G. Simpson, A. Swanston, E. C. Chegwin, J. Eowe, Eennie and Pearce, and R. Powrie (Powrie Bros.) The Chairman said the meeting had been called in consequence of a communication from Wellington in connection with the Wages Protection Act. The Wellington Society desired to know the opinion of the Christchurch Society concerning clauses 9to 18. The Chairman, after reading the* clauses referred to, pointed out that the Labour Bills Committee had recommended that these clauses should be struck out. Mr S. P. Andrews said that the clauses objected to wore most startling to him. Under the Workmen's Lien Act lie did not see how a contractor was to pay his men. Mr Andrews moved and Mr M. Smith seconded the following resolution : — " That the recommendation of the Labour Bills Commit/tee to strike out clauses 9 to 18 of the_ab'dve Act be approved of by. this nieeting." This was carried unanimously; and it was moved "by Mr Greig, seconded by Mr Harrison and carried — " That a copy' of the above resolution be wired to the ■Secretary of the Wellington Society." It was further resolved, on the motion of Mr Greig, seconded by Mr Turvey—" That a meeting be called of all contractors and sub-contractors . in the building trade at 7.30 p.m. on Monday night to protest against the obnoxious clauses of the Bill." A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings."
