Picnic— At the Ashley Gorge on Wednesday, a delightful day was spent by about a hundred excursionists, who represented the temperance societies at Horrelville, Stoke and Cnst. The weather, which was all that could be desired, materially contributed to the pleasure of the occasion. • Land Settlement.— Applications for ■lotion* in the Ashley Gorge estate and tha Kereta settlement will close on Wednesday next, and the ballot, if necessary, will takeplace at the Land Ofiico at 11 cum'; on Thursday. ' The Kereta settlement consists of four sections of respectively 23, 26, 26 and 29 acres, and is situated in the Arowhenua district. .'A Pwsabtob Ground.— The Ashley Gorge being a favourite, pleasure rcßort, the possibility of the sale' of the estate by the ■ Government interfering with the privileges hitherto enjoyed by picnic parties has caused Borne anxiety- In consequence of thiß Mr D. Buddo, M.H.E., asked the Minister of Lands to reserve fifteen acres for recreation purposes, and yesterday h9 received a reply to the effeot that, in addition to a reserve a chain in width along the river banks, eleven acres would be set aside for a {sanation reserve.
