Ballance Liberal Association.
Last Friday evening Mr J. H. M'Millan, the President of the Ballance Liberal Association, was entertained at a dinner at the Waltham Arms. About thirty gentlemen sat down to an excellent spread provided by Host Thomas Meyer. Mr S. Lawrence was in the ohair. The Chairman proposed the toaßt of "The Queen and Boyal Family." This was followed by "The Governnor and Parliament," responded to by Mr Thomas Gapes. The toast of "The Ballance Liberal Association" having been duly honoured. Mr Gapes, on behalf the subscribers, presented to Mr M'Millan, for his infant son, a silver mug, knife, fork and spoon. The mug wub the work of Mr Fred Gapes, and bore the inscription, "R.P.B.M;" Mr M'Millan suitably responded. The chairman then presented Mr M'Millan with a watchguard and greenstone pendant subscribed for by the members of the Association. The present was manufactured on the premises of Mr F. Gapes. Mr M'Millan having suitably responded, the Treasurer of the Association was toasted, and replied. Other toasts were—" Kindred ABsociations," proposed by Mr Dynes,- senr., and responded to by Mr Meyer. "The Lady Vice-presidents," " New Zealand," "Host Meyer and Mrs Meyer," "The Ladies," and "The Chairman." Songs were Bung by -Messrs Sim, M'Millan, Lußk, Wright, Donnelly, Elwood and Freeman. The singing of " Auld Lang Syne," brought a very enjoyable evening to a close.
Caledonian Sommt.— Last night a cribbage match took place at the Caledonian Society's rooms between sixteen ladiea and the same numbs* of members of the olub. The latter won by thirty-eieht games to the ladies' thirty-four. Refreshments were provided and a very pleasant evening waß spent.
