TRIAL MATCH.

The third trial match of the season was played on the East Christchurch Club's Ground, North Park, on Saturday afternoon. The ground had been affected by the previous day's rain, but this did not hamper the players to any great extent, and the game was the best of the series. A. Hobbs, centre three-quarter, was absent from the ranks of the A team (Beds), and Lorirner filled the position in the first spell and Beeee in the second. The teams, with this exception, played as seleoted. Kerr started the game for the Beds, and after the usual exchange of kicks the Colours forwards, headed by Forreßt, Fitzgerald, Glennie and Meikleham, broke aw&y to the Bed's twenty-five. The incursion was only temporary, however, forOram, Eerr, Lynskey and Duke soon gained a footing in the Colours' territory, and Cowlishaw made two strong runs, being well tackled by Stringer and Spring. The Beds'forwards were at this stage not playing at all well, and while they seemed to be -waiting for the ball, their opponents in the front division were making good use of their time. But for the sound defence of Cook, Lorimer, Cowlishaw and Orchard, a score must have resulted. For fully half an hour the Colours had decidedly the best of the play, but after this the Bed forwards showed up much better, and for the remander of the game they more than held their own. Oram, Johnstone and O'Brien scored tries for the Beds, who were leading by nine points to nothing at the end of the first spell. The opening incident in the second spell waß a fine run by Forreßt, who was well tackled by Orchard. A scrummage was formed a yard or two from the Beds' line, and the Colours, getting the ball out, gave Glendinning an opportunity to send ib along to Stringer, who dashed over. The Beds made some fine rushes after this, and Johnstone, Fraser and Eerr scored tries in quick succession. No goals were kicked, the place-kicking being very weak. Just be* fore the close of the game, Pearoe made a fine run for the Colours, and evading Orchard, scored a well-deserved try. Appleby just failed to kick a goal. The Beds fchuß won by eighteen points (six tries) to six points (two ttiee.) Mr W. G. Garrard was referee.
