Memorial Service.

THE MISSIONARIES TO CHINA. - A memorial service to the victims of the recent massacres in China was held in the Cathedral yesterday morning, the preacher being the Bight Rev the Bishop of Christchurch. There was a very large congregation, the building being filled in every part. Bishop Julius took as his test; 11. Samuel xxiii, 15 and following veraea, and in his opening remarks instanced the devotion of the Greeks at Thermopylae and of the British troops at Balaklava, which, though seemingly useless from a practical point of view, had beat invaluable as furnishing great moral examples. He referred to the visit of the late Dr Stewart to Christchurch, and said that by his means an association had been formed to help the poor and destitute of this city. He (Bishop Julius) considered that, though it might have been just and right for Dr Stewart and the other missionaries to seek refuge from the danger that threatened them, they had chosen the higher path by remaining at the post of duty. Hia lordship concluded with an eloquent appeal to the congregation for their assistance in furthering the work of the Church throughout the world. At the commencement of the service the " Dead March in Saul" was played very effectively, and the anthem was from Spohr'a "Laßt Judgment." The collections during the day were in aid of the Mission Fund."
