The Council rejected a motion, on behalf of the Government, to postpone the Land and Inoome Tax Assessment Bill for a week, and decided by a large majority to take the second reading to-day. Members complained that it waa bsing purposely kept back. It is believed that the Council intends to hang the Bill op or deal summarily with it. Should this be the case an early prorogation h certain.

In the Legislative Assembly, the tariff proposale *re being discussed. An amendment haa been moved adding a provision to the schedule that the maximum for all ad valorem duties shall be 25 per cent.
PROTECTION. A conference of Protectionists and manu-
faoturers ia being held to consider recommendations to be submitted to Parliament with respect to the report of the Tariff Board. A resolution was carried pledging the various trades to stand shoulder to shoulder in influencing members in favour of Protection. -
